Landmark Legislation for Eating Disorders Treatment

Jan 10, 2017

Tragically, 17 years ago Anna Westin committed suicide. She was only 21 at the time. I have heard her mom Kitty tell the story that Anna felt so hopeless in her eating disorder that it lead to her death. Anna needed residential treatment desperately but was unable to access care due to limitations of her insurance policy. Since the loss of her daughter, Kitty Westin has been a tireless advocate in the field of eating disorders prevention, treatment, and parity issues. Her efforts have come to fruition with the recent passage of the 21st Century Cures and Mental Health Reform Act. This act includes provisions from the Anna Westin Act and is the first of it’s kind with specific inclusions related to eating disorders prevention and care.

Today we thank Kitty and the Eating Disorders Coalition for their tremendous contributions. This is a great step in the right direction.
